These books were recommended by the Calgary Zoo staff. You might want to visit your local library to see what other books about elephants and animal behaviour they might have available. "When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals" Exploring the full range of emotions that exist throughout the animal kingdom, the authors present powerful proof of the existence of animal emotions. This book will forever change the way you look at animals. "The Elephant's Secret Sense: The Hidden Life of the Wild Herds of Africa" Biologist Caitlin O'Connell writes about elephants in the Caprivi region of Namibia. While researching and watching the elephants, she made an astonishing observation: Elephants listen through the ground with their limbs (feet and trunk). This 'seismic' way of communication has led to additional and intensive study. "The White Bone" This Canadian novel is an animal-fantasy story in which the elephants are characters and they can talk to each other. It is a beautiful book about an elephant herd's quest to find the legendary 'Safe Place'. The author has used her extensive research to not only make the individual characters real, but also the familial relationships and elephant behaviour are quite realistic. "Wild Elephants in Captivity" This book is all about, you guessed it, wild elephants in captivity. |
