And So Ahmed Hears
Written by Dawn Doig and Illustrated by Renne Benoit
Introduction written by author's husband Bruce Doig.
Over ten years ago, our family had a chance to move to the Middle East - Kuwait, specifically - where Dawn was part of a multi-disciplinary team training medical specialists in best practices and procedures. Out of this experience with the people of Kuwait came 'And So Ahmed Hears'.
The book was originally illustrated by Dawn's six-year-old daughter, Marisa, and periodically was pulled out for reading and sharing. As time went on and our children got older, however, the time between readings got longer and longer. Then one day Dawn happened to mention her book to a hearing aid representative who expressed an interest in reading it.
The rep liked it, but it didn't fit in with the plans of the company itself. Shelved again, Dawn put it out of mind for awhile. Then, one day out of nowhere, the company contacted her again, expressing an interest.
This book is brought to you by Widex. It is published to help parents and children understand how hearing loss impacts young children and what symptoms might look like. Most importantly, this is a humanitarian message. Neither Widex nor Dawn makes any money from the book. Dawn is just thrilled to increase awareness of hearing loss among young children and Widex is happy to provide an avenue for parents and children to learn more about hearing loss.
So, a big thank you both to Widex and Dawn for caring enough to expand awareness of an all-too frequent occurrence: hearing loss among children. We all hope you enjoy the book as much as we have!
